AIRROC and EECMA Present
Meg
a-Superfund Site Symposium
AIRROC is pleased to partner for the first time wit
h the Environmental and Emerging Claim Manager Association (EECMA) to prese
nt a very unique one day program.
This one day symposium will address the many challenges that arise from Mega Superfund S ites, such as the Portland Harbor, the Lower Passaic River and other simila r contaminated sediment sites, with remediation c osts estimated in the billions.
The confer ence will cover the regulatory climate governing such sites under the curre nt Administration, a discussion of a proposed expansion of the Great Lakes Legacy Act scheme, the unique challenges concerning the remediation of the se sites, the Natural Resource Damage components of these sites, how the c omplex legal liability allocation process works and defenses to liability, and the insurance coverage implications. It will bring together thought lea ders from industry, the legal profession, the scientific community, enviro nmental consulting firms, academia, government regulators, and the insuranc e industry. This is an essential conference for all stakeholders involved w ith these sites and is intended to be a launching pad for further discussio n, learning and networking around these issues.
Remediation of large Superfund sites with has received growing attention in the United States in recent years. Contaminated sediments on these sites a re viewed as a "fourth environmental medium", with concerns over the impact to sediment being equal to those for water, air, and land-disposed waste. In 1997, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) completed the fir st comprehensive inventory of sediment contamination nationwide. The result s of the inventory indicated sediment contamination present in over 70% of U.S. watersheds. Some of these sites have cleanup costs estimated in the bi llions of dollars. As of September 2015, Superfund has selected a remedy at 71 Tier 1 sediment sites, where the chosen remedy addressed more than 10,0 00 cubic yards or 5 acres of contaminated sediment. Seventeen sites are con sidered Tier 2 sediment sites and are monitored and reviewed by the Contami nated Sediments Technical Advisory Group.
