Education Day Agenda

Education Day Sessions, Monday, October 21:  (offered in person and virtually via livestream)

Keynote Speaker:  Elaine Rocha, C-Suite Executive and Board Member
AIRROC is honored to have Elaine Rocha, Esq., most recently the former Senior Vice President and Global Chief Investment Officer of AIG as our opening keynote. She has extensive experience in investments, financial management, law and governance, operations, strategic planning, and major transformation and change initiatives. Elaine will take a broad look at the insurance industry and how we serve at the leading edge for society  -- as well as bring it more specifically to legacy and what she sees as our potential. She has had extensive and varied experiences throughout her career which she will share and draw upon throughout the discussion as we continue to guide and lead the way for younger professionals.

Market Insights and Perspectives: What is Guiding the Legacy Sector?
Our Mayer Brown chair will lead discussions that take a macro look at the global economy and impact on the insurance sector as well as a more micro look at the implications for the legacy markets. An overview of the state of the economic and financial markets and resulting effects on insurance deal-making generally, and the role of runoff deals in the wider insurance M&A deal setting.  Data and insights on deals, activity and trends in the legacy market will be highlighted.  The audience will have the chance to also “weigh in” with our voting app.

The Legacy Market “Buy-Side” and The Impact of Private Equity
Chaired by Willkie Farr, our panelists will examine the new entrants in the buy-side reinsurers that are in the run-off market, market exits and entrances, and recent M&A activity.  We are seeing more players that are either owned, or being acquired, by private equity firms. What is the motivation of private equity in run-off?  What impacts are we seeing?

Charting Our Path: Minority Narratives in the Corporate World
Join us for an insightful panel discussion featuring three professionals who will share their personal experiences as minorities in corporate America. This presentation will delve into the complexities of navigating the corporate landscape, particularly through the lens of recruitment. Panelists will discuss the challenges they faced, from biases in hiring practices to the impact of DEI initiatives on their career trajectories. The session will also highlight successful strategies and actionable steps that organizations can take to foster a more inclusive and equitable environment. Whether you're a recruiter, HR professional, or an advocate for diversity, this panel offers valuable perspectives on the importance of DEI in shaping the future of corporate recruitment.

Legends of the Fall – Recent Developments That May Turn the Tide on NY Labor Law Construction Claims
The New York Labor Law applies strict liability against building owners for nearly any fall by a worker from nearly any height on a jobsite.  This unique feature of New York law has led to an avalanche of claims – many inflated and many outright fraudulent – that has led to a crisis of construction claims for property developers and the insurance industry, including legacy books with construction or workers’ compensation exposure.  But recent developments in 2024 provide some hope for the industry in turning the tide against fraudulent and inflated claims.  This session will explore many aspects of this growing issue including how the claims work and how they have grown over recent years, potential legislative developments to address them, review Federal racketeering litigation brought by insurance industry companies against the alleged players in the fraudulent conspiracy, and what these developments might mean for valuing and handling legacy books with these exposures.

Artificial Intelligence for Insurance Professionals
This program has been tailored to provide insurance professionals with an overview of Artificial Intelligence and its related legal concerns.  Specifically, our speaker will start with a general overview of the technology, explaining what AI currently can and cannot do, including a summary of how AI is already disrupting different industries and how that may impact different lines of coverage both today and tomorrow, and provide a preview of what to expect with AI in the future. The discussion will then turn to the legal concerns, discussing the current general laws and regulations addressing AI today and the new laws and regulations that are coming in the near future. Finally, the discussion will close with an overview of the laws and regulations that are specific to insurance companies and provide an overview of how to address compliance issues related to the same.
