AIRROC and EECMA Present
This one day symposium will address the many challenges that arise from Mega Superfund Sites, such as the Portland Harbor, the Lower Passaic River and other similar contaminated sediment sites, with remediation costs estimated in the billions. The conference will cover the regulatory climate governing such sites under the current Administration, a discussion of a proposed expansion of the Great Lakes Legacy Act scheme, the unique challenges concerning the remediation of these sites, the Natural Resource Damage components of these sites, how the complex legal liability allocation process works and defenses to liability, and the insurance coverage implications. It will bring together thought leaders from industry, the legal profession, the scientific community, environmental consulting firms, academia, government regulators, and the insurance industry. This is an essential conference for all stakeholders involved with these sites and is intended to be a launching pad for further discussion, learning and networking around these issues. Remediation of large Superfund sites with has received growing attention in the United States in recent years. Contaminated sediments on these sites are viewed as a "fourth environmental medium", with concerns over the impact to sediment being equal to those for water, air, and land-disposed waste. In 1997, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) completed the first comprehensive inventory of sediment contamination nationwide. The results of the inventory indicated sediment contamination present in over 70% of U.S. watersheds. Some of these sites have cleanup costs estimated in the billions of dollars. As of September 2015, Superfund has selected a remedy at 71 Tier 1 sediment sites, where the chosen remedy addressed more than 10,000 cubic yards or 5 acres of contaminated sediment. Seventeen sites are considered Tier 2 sediment sites and are monitored and reviewed by the Contaminated Sediments Technical Advisory Group. Featured Sessions:
